A great choice for a satisfying meal, just on the outskirts of West Jefferson. The ordering system is in a cafeteria style. The barbecue itself is very yummy, and so was the fried chicken. The sides were exceptional. We tried the fried okra, baked beans, potato salad, green beans, and chili beans, all of which we liked. Both sauces provided at the table were good. The only reason this restaurant didn't make it to five stars is the fact that the plates and cups were styrofoam and the cutlery was plastic, which is detrimental to the environment. Otherwise, great restaurant!

On vacation in a cabin in the beautiful mountains of West Jefferson, we decided to try Smokey Mountain BBQ. It is a cafeteria style restaurant serving BBQ & many other Southern Foods.
They serve a whole hog Q. The meat is very clean with little fat/gristle. The Q has a mild flavor with few spices. They provide a vinegar based sauce or a sweet sauce. We tried a large pork BBQ plate with fried okra & Brunswick stew. The okra was good & the Brunswick stew was outstanding. We also had a Q sandwich with red slaw. It was very good. We had a side of apples which were likely canned & ok.
I would recommend. The menu had many more items I would love to try: fried chicken, catfish & chicken livers. The people are friendly & the food i -

Very delicious southern food. I had the fried chicken plate with hush puppies, mac and cheese, and sweet potato casserole. Everything was SO GOOD. The line was long, but the quality and price were worth it. Finish your meal off with a large sweet tea and slice of pie! I insist!

My wife and I road tripped down from Wisconsin for a wedding in West Jefferson, North Carolina. We picked Smokey Mountain BBQ because we wanted to eat some great local BBQ and fried chicken. This place definitely lived up to our expectations! The food was so delicious and tasted home made. And the people were incredibly hospitable and friendly. The owner/manager came running out when he saw us looking confused at the menu. He asked us where we from and how we were doing, and he personally walked us through the menu to help us find something we both liked! During our meal he made sure to stop over and check in with us on our meal. He was genuinely one of the kindest people we have come across! If you are in town looking for a home cooked style southern meal, then stop in and make your self at home!

This is truly a good place to go as it has stood the test of time and the people keep coming. Last nite we both tried the Catfish, I had the large she had the small. Any fish ordered has to be fried after you order, so they bring it to you. When it came I was blown, saying what was I thinking, she says "real men don't ask". We laughed, there were three huge fillets as opposed to two for the small, need I say more. Their tartar sauce is excellent and the fish was very enjoyable, 1/2 went home for today's lunch. For those BBQ nuts that are overly critical and want it just so I suggest the chicken-- it is some of the best around. Don't get me wrong, their BBQ is good too, I am not the picky kind!
